to sell down the river
To sell somebody down the river — это предать кого-либо. В США после 1808 г. было запрещено ввозить рабов, поэтому их покупали в районе на верхнем Юге, где выращивали табак, и перевозили вниз по течению Миссисипи на рабовладельческие рынки Нового Орлеана. Таким образом, раб, который был sold down the river, часто терял и свою семью, и надежду на свободу. По другой версии происхождения этого выражения, непокорного раба часто продавали владельцу тростниковой сахарной плантации на Юге США, где жизнь была гораздо тяжелее.

The firm made me redundant. My view is that they just sold me down the river. — Меня уволили из фирмы. По-моему, это чистое предательство.
